Grandma Martha and 1st grader Charlie
Grandma Martha serves in an Elementary School in Duluth. Last year she worked with a young boy named “Charlie.” Charlie didn’t think that math was necessary – he would rather have sat in the room and drawn trucks all day long. While Grandma Martha learned about fellers, bunchers, and wood chippers, he learned how to count truck wheels and to write the numbers that corresponded to the wheels on his trucks. “Semis have a lot of wheels!” he told me once, beaming with pride because he was counting higher than he’d ever counted before. This year he’s moved on to a different grade, but still stops her in the hall to chat and tell her about how well he’s doing in second grade.
