The Senior Companion Program

The Senior Companion Program (SCP) is one of the three Senior Corps programs by the National Senior Service Corps. The Senior Companion Program offers seniors age 60 and older the opportunity to serve individuals who have difficulty with daily living tasks. Senior Companions serve many at-risk, frail elderly who would in many cases have to go to a nursing home if they did not have this one-to-one support.

Senior Companions serve from 15 to 20 hours per week and receive a small tax-free stipend for their service time. The stipend does not affect any other benefits they may already be receiving. They may also be eligible to receive a travel and meal allowance on the days they volunteer.

Would you or someone you know be interested in serving as a friend to a homebound senior citizen?

Senior Companion volunteers receive the benefit of knowing they are helping others. In addition, they receive the financial benefit of an hourly, non-taxable stipend and may be eligible to receive a meal allowance, transportation reimbursement, volunteer insurance and paid time off.
